Academic Staff Union Of Polytechnics Begin Indefinite Strike

 

    The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) on Wednesday began an indefinite strike over non-implementation of the 2009 and 2017 agreement reached with the union by the federal government. The polytechnic lecturers now join their university colleagues who have been on strike since November 4. The National President of ASUP, Usman Dutse, said the federal government had invited the union for dialogue on December 17 but the strike would continue till then.

Turkish high speed train crashes

 

  A Turkish high speed train collided with another locomotive and crashed into an overpass at a train station in Ankara on Thursday, killing four persons and injuring 43, the local governor said.  Video footage showed emergency workers at the scene, working to rescue people from carriages trapped beneath the mangled metal wreckage of an overpass at the Marsandiz train station, to the west of Ankara.

Egypt, Congo Brazzaville bid for AFCON 2019


   Egypt and Congo Brazzaville are bidding to host the 2019 African Cup of Nations(AFCON), the continental football showpiece. Egypt, which had hosted the tournament four times, announced its interest after Morocco opted out.

   British Prime Minister Theresa May will retain her job at least till next year, after she won a confidence vote triggered by 48 Conservative rebel MPs, who hate the Brexit deal she worked out with EU in November.
