Court orders arrest of former Enugu state governor, Chimaroke Nnamani

Justice Chuka Obiozor of the Federal High Court in Lagos has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of a former governor of Enugu State, Chimaroke Nnamani, who has been accused of N5.3 billion embezzlement. Justice Obiozor issued the order of arrest following the failure of the former governor’s lawyer, to give any reasonable reason why his client was absent in court.

Chimaroke is standing trial on a 105-count charge of money laundering and economic crimes to the tune of N4.5 billion. he allegedly committed the offense during his tenure as Governor of Enugu State between 1999 and 2007.

At the resumed hearing of the case this morning, counsel to the former governor told the court that Nnamani had undergone a heart surgery in the United States and this was responsible for his absence. His submission was however objected to by the prosecution who told the court that the photographs brought by the lawyer as proof had been taken in 2014. The judge afterwards issued a bench warrant for the former governor's arrest.
