Restoring A Bad Marriage (Part 4) by Pastor Faith Oyedepo

Dear Reader,

I welcome you to the last edition of this month teaching series and am confident that you have been blessed, I pray that your home is totally restored from any and every form of disaster in Jesus’ name. Today marks the beginning of new things for you and your family even as you take yield to God’s word in this last series.

Knowing fully well that a faulty foundation is the root cause of a bad marriage. This week I will be sharing with you, restoration from a bad marriage which begins by laying a solid foundation for your marriage.

It is important for you to know that marriage is a covenant relationship and not a promise. It is not just coming together of a man and a woman for the purpose of procreation. Although having children is one of the blessings of marriage, marriage means much more than that. There are certain conditions that are attached to a covenant, while a promise does not have any attached to it. Many people, especially Christians, think that a good marriage is a promise from God, so they wait endlessly for the fulfilment of that promise. Others think it comes by wishing, so they keep wishing. There is an adage that says, “If wishes were horses, beggars would ride.”

A good marriage or home is not a promise from God, neither does it come by wishing. The marriage covenant involves two parties: God on one hand and the man (and his wife) on the other. God is the initiator of the covenant and His terms of agreement are sealed up in His Word. Man on his part is required to obey God’s terms of the agreement.

God instituted marriage and family life and made the terms and limits of the marriage covenant available to us through His Word in the Bible. The Bible says: God upholds all things by the Word of His power (Heb.1:3) all things including marriage and family life. This scripture clearly reveals to us that God’s Word is power.

If your marriage and family life must be upheld and not crumble, if they must succeed and become outstanding, you need the power in the Word of God. You can’t put God and His Word aside and expect to have a good marriage. The foundation for a good marriage is following what God says about marriage and doing it. Take these three components out of marriage, fellowship, communion and concord, then marriage is a doom. This is because marriage is a mysterious union of two different individuals, who come together in a special covenant relationship. So, marriage is all about togetherness.

Man’s hardness of heart towards God’s instructions has been a major reason for marital and family failure, the world over. The Lord Jesus said … But from the beginning, it was not so… God’s design for marriage and family life, in the beginning, was set towards fruitfulness and multiplication; it wasn’t designed or billed for failure, heartaches or sorrow. Even now, you don’t have to suffer family failure. In fact, you can experience a great family life if you open up to God’s Wisdom. The reason for some couple divorce situation is their hardness of heart. My husband used to say, “You need a heart to make a mark”, and if I may add, “You need a right heart to make a right mark in your family life.”

However, to enjoy fulfilment in the marriage covenant, co-operation between the husband and the wife is a major requirement. Wherever the man does not co-operate with the woman or the woman does not co-operate with the man, fulfilment remains a dream that never be realized. God will always fulfil His own side of the covenant.

The man and his wife who are the second party in the marriage covenant are the variables. They must be ready to obey the terms of the agreement as stated in God’s Word, so they can reap the rewards that go with obedience. Disobedience to God is the beginning of a bad marriage. The disobedience of man (and his wife) to the terms of the covenant as stated in God’s Word is usually the cause of many marital sorrows, problems, frustration and eventual divorce.

Many people want to enjoy a good marriage but are not ready to be obedient to the terms of the covenant. Outside of obedience, the fruit of a good home cannot be obtained. A good marriage or home is, therefore, the fruit of obedience. A good and fulfilled marriage is possible, but only those that are ready to obey the terms of the agreement can have access to this unique fruit.

The foundation of a good marriage is God. Do you want to enjoy good marriage? Give your life to Christ. This entails confessing your sins and accepting Jesus as your Lord and Saviour. If you are ready for this new birth experience, please say this prayer of faith with me: Dear Lord Jesus, I come to You today as a sinner. I believe You died and rose on the third day for my sins. I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Make me a child of God today. Thank You for accepting me into Your Kingdom in Jesus name, Amen.
