Ondo Poly lecturers begin strike over 13- month salary arrears

    Lecturers of the Ondo state owned, Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Friday June 9, embarked on a strike over non-payment of their 13-month salary arrears.

   The lecturers said they won’t be part of the first semester examination of the institution which starts on Tuesday, June 13.  In a communique issued and signed by the Union’s Chairman, Arikawe Ade and Secretary, Fapetu Damilola, the lecturers said the strike decision was taken to pursue their demands for payment of the outstanding 13-months salary.

Electricity workers join NLC's proposed strike

 


 

    The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has directed its members to withdraw their services nationwide on Wednesday, June 7 and join the strike action proposed by the Nigerian Labour Congress NLC over the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal government.

Edo: I remain authentic village head, 93-years-old Obazee claims

   


   The Odionwere of Iyowa Community in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State, Pa Samson Obazee, 93, yesterday, said he remains the substantive head of the community.


He said the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, confirmed his headship in September 2022. Addressing newsmen at the community town hall, Counsel to Pa Obazee, Unity Omatseye said the matter of who becomes the Odionwere of the community is already in court and that it has ordered them to maintain status quo.

No major fraud is committed without the connivance of bank officials - EFCC

 The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has said that no major fraud committed in the banking sector without the connivance of bank employees. 


The commander of the Ilorin zonal command of EFCC, Michael Nzekwe, said this when he spoke at an interactive session with banks’ compliance officers from Kwara and Kogi states, while admonishing bankers to know their customers as well as the business of their customers.

UNILAG Student Slumps And Dies While Playing Football

 


 

   Tragedy struck on Sunday at the University of Lagos, after a 100 level student of the Department of Social Work, Faculty of Social Science, Simon Adokwu, slumped and died while playing football on the premises of the school in Akoka, Lagos State.


Punch Metro gathered that Adokwu, after attending church service, went to play football at a field near the University’s Human Resource Development Centre. The undergraduate was said to be playing football with his colleagues when he suddenly slumped.


In a bid to rescue him, Adokwu’s colleagues rushed him to the medical centre where the doctor on duty confirmed him dead. The Varsity’s Public Relations Officer, Alagba Ibraheem, who confirmed the development to Punch correspondent on Thursday, said the 22-year-old, before going to the pitch to play football, told his friends that he was sick.

Why Buhari approves sack of NYSC DG, Fadah

   


 Barely six months after resumption of office as the 19th Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), President Muhammadu Buhari, on Thursday, approved the immediate removal of Brigadier-General Muhammad Kukah Fadah, from office as the scheme’s boss.

Brig Gen MK Fadah had formally assumed office as the 19th NYSC DG on Wednesday, May 18, this year after his appointment as replacement for his predecessor, Major Ibrahim Shuaibu.

ASUU Strike: NANS Demands Education Minister’s Resignation

 



 


   The National Association of Nigerian Students on Tuesday called for the resignation of the Minister of Education, Mr Adamu Adamu, over the lingering strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.


The leadership of NANS said this during the protest that took place on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway alleging that the minister had shown no interest in dialoguing with ASUU to call off the strike.

Northern state Governors and monarchs call for amendment of the 1999 Constitution to give legal backing to state police

   



   The 19 northern governors and all the traditional rulers in the region have called for the amendment of the 1999 Constitution to give legal backing to state police. The resolution was captured in a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting of the Northern Governors Forum (NGF) and the Northern Traditional Rulers Council (NTRC) held on Monday night in Abuja. 


   Daily Trust reported that the Northern leaders said this is the only way to tackle the myriad security challenges affecting the region and the country at large, among them banditry, insurgency, kidnapping and other forms of criminalities.

Osinbajo Returns To Nigeria After Ruto’s Inauguration

 




   Vice President Yemi Osinbajo returned to Nigeria on Tuesday night after he attended the inauguration of Dr. William Ruto as Kenya’s 5th President in Nairobi, the capital city of the East African country.

DSS Accuses Tukur Mamu Of Aiding, Abetting Acts Of Terrorism

   


   The Department of State Services (DSS) has accused Tukur Mamu, the Kaduna train attack negotiator, of aiding and abetting acts of terrorism. This was made known in an affidavit in support of an ex-parte motion marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1617/2022 and filed before Justice Nkeonye Maha of the Federal High Court in Abuja.


Justice Maha had issued a ruling on the ex-parte motion moved by counsel to the DSS, Ahmed Magaji, granting the security agency permission to detain Mamu for 60 more days pending the conclusion of its investigation. The security agency alleged that Mamu, the publisher of Desert Herald, was involved in the funding of international and local terrorism.

Police rescue 3 kidnap victims, recover arms and ammunition in Kaduna

 


   Operatives of the Kaduna State Police Command have rescued three kidnapped victims, recovered arms, ammunition and operational vehicles in two different locations.


Spokesperson of the command, DSP Muhammad Jalige, who disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, September 11, 2022, said two of the victims are wives of one Alhaji Haruna of Kwanan Dangora, Kano State.  


The PPRO said the Inspector General of Police, IGP Usman Baba’s directives on rigorous visible patrols and domination of public space by police had continued to yield the desired outcome with the rescue of the victims.  

Chairman of the Bayelsa Environmental Sanitation Authority slumps and dies

 


  The chairman of the Bayelsa Environmental Sanitation Authority (BESA), Tolu Amatu,  The Sun reported that Amatu, a former aspirant for the Sagbama/ Ekeremor Federal Constituency seat slumped in his house at Bay Bridge, Kpansia, Yenagoa Sunday morning September 11, and died before getting to the hospital.
