Manchester United announce Juan Mata to leave Old Trafford after eight years

   


   Manchester United has announced that Juan Mata will leave the club after eight years  when his contract expires at the end of the month. The 34-year-old was signed by David Moyes from Premier League rivals Chelsea in January 2014 and went on to make 285 appearances for United, scoring 51 goals.

Mali Replaces D’Tigress At FIBA World Cup After FG’s Withdrawal

   


  The world governing body for basketball, FIBA, has replaced Nigeria’s female basketball team, the D’Tigress, with Mali for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022 in Belgrade. Nigeria was disqualified after President Muhammadu Buhari suspended the country from participating in all international basketball competitions and activities for a period of two years.

FIBA Threatens Sanctions Over Nigeria’s Basketball Suspension

   


   World basketball body FIBA has threatened to sanction Nigeria over its decision to withdraw from international competitions for two years. FIBA in a letter signed by its Head of Legal, Jaime Lamboy, and dated May 18, 2022, the body said Nigeria’s decision was in breach of Article 9.7 of FIBA’s General Statutes.


“National member federations shall manage their affairs independently and with no influence from third parties,” the letter addressed to Nigeria Basketball Federation President, Musa Ahmadu-Kida, read in part. Article 10.2 of the FIBA Statutes stated that on the initiative of the Secretary-General, FIBA Central Board may suspend a national member federation for the breach of Article 9.7.


The implication of the sanction would mean that Nigeria will miss out on the 2024 Olympic Games, as well as the 2025 World Championships for the male and female teams.  FIBA also reacted to a letter earlier written to them by the Ahmadu-Kida-led NBBF board.

Watford decline to sign Super Eagles player Peter Etebo permanently from Stoke City

     



      Watford based paper, the Watford Observer in a new report on Tuesday, May 17, said that the club's new manager Rob Edwards doesn't see him as part of his plans due to his injury concerns.

    Following a nice start to his career at Watford, injury forced Etebo, 26, to miss out on months of football, after which he has been on the sidelines. Watford have an option to sign him permanently should they wish to, but club sources have told the Watford Observer they do not think he will be needed. The report reads;

Ronaldo’s move to Manchester United sees shares soar by eight percent

   


  Manchester United’s shares have soared by 8 percent following the return of Cristiano Ronaldo to the    EPL side. On Friday afternoon, Friday 27, United announced that they have agreed on a deal to bring the 36-year-old back to Old Trafford. This gave a major boost to the shares of United, which is publicly traded in the United States, as reported by CNN.

British-Nigerian footballer Samuel Oji passes away at 35

   


British-Nigerian footballer, Samuel Oji has died at the age of 35. The former Arsenal youth player and League of Ireland footballer is said to have been battling 'illness.'Oji kicked off his career at the Gunners as a teenager in 2000, but failed to make the grade and joined Birmingham in 2004.

  The defender,  the cousin of English singer,  Lemar - also turned out for Doncaster Rovers, Leyton Orient, Bristol Rovers, and Hereford United during his career. Oji was most recently working as assistant manager at non-league outfit Highgate United which play in the Midland League Premier Division - the ninth tier of English football.

Cristiano Ronaldo 'agrees personal terms with Manchester City'

   


Superstar footballer, Cristiano Ronaldo has agreed on personal terms with Manchester City despite playing for rival Manchester United during the peak of his career. The 36-year-old's future at Juventus has been cast into doubt this summer and his agent Jorge Mendes had to flew to Italy to meet the Serie A giants' bosses to discuss a resolution. 

 According to new reports in Portugal, Ronaldo has spoken with City boss Pep Guardiola, and that the Italian side are now in talks with the Premier League champions about letting him leave three years after he joined. Reports in Italy earlier this week reported that City had offered the former Manchester United star a two-year deal worth £230,000 per week after missing out on Tottenham striker Harry Kane.

   The Argentina captain became a free agent this summer after his contract with Barcelona expired. The club was expected to re-sign him after positive initial talks between all parties but  LaLiga's financial regulations made it impossible.

Jack Grealish joins Man City in £100m deal

   


    Manchester City have signed Jack Grealish from Aston Villa for £100m in the biggest deal in English football history, eclipsing their direct rivals deal for Pogba in 2016. The England international has signed a six-year contract after turning down the offer of a new deal at Villa Park.

   Grealish, 25, who has been handed the number 10 shirt vacated by Sergio Aguero, is set to make his debut in the Community Shield clash with Leicester City at Wembley. Pep Guardiola has been a long-time admirer of Grealish with the player leaving Villa having made 213 appearances over the course of eight seasons, scoring 32 goals.

   On the announcement, Jack Grealish said: “I am incredibly happy to have joined Manchester City. “City are the best team in the country with a manager considered to be the best in the world – it’s a dream come true to be part of this club. “Over the past 10 seasons, they have won major trophies consistently. Pep (Guardiola) coming here has taken them to the next level and the football this team plays is the most exciting in Europe.

Barcelona Announce Lionel Messi’s Departure

   



   Argentine superstar Lionel Messi will not sign a new deal with Barcelona, ending his two-decade stay at the Nou Camp, the Spanish giants have said.

   “Despite FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi having reached an agreement and the clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract today, this cannot happen because of financial and structural obstacles (Spanish Liga regulations),” Barcelona said in a statement on Thursday.

Super Eagles goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye signs new contract with Sparta Rotterdam

 



    Super Eagles goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye has signed a new contract with Sparta Rotterdam that will see him remain at the Eredivisie club until 2025.

  The in-form goalkeeper, Okoye linked up with Sparta Rotterdam last summer after playing for German club Fortuna Dusseldorf. ‘We hired Maduka a year ago because we thought he was a great talent’, manager Henk Fraser told the club’s official website.

Olympics: FG to reward gold medalists with $15,000

   


     The Federal Government is set to give cash rewards of 15, 000 dollars, 10, 000 dollars, 7, 500 dollars for gold, silver and bronze medalists at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics respectively.

   Simon Ebohdjaiye, Director, Federation and Elite Athletes Department (FEAD), Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development made the announcement on Tuesday in Tokyo. He said the reward was an upward review from the initial amount announced due to the dedication of the athletes.

    Jack Grealish will complete his £100million move to Manchester City and become the most expensive English footballer in the world, surpassing the £89 million spent by Manchester United on Paul Pogba in 2016. Manchester City are close to finalizing the £100 million deal for the 25-year-old, who is expected to sign his contract ahead of completing the British record transfer deal.

Tokyo Olympics: Ese Brume Wins Nigeria’s First Medal

   



    Long jumper Ese Brume has won Nigeria’s first medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Brume, 25, claimed the bronze medal in the women’s long jump at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo on Tuesday. She achieved the feat with a 6.97m jump, two days after she qualified for the finals with a jump of 6.76m.
