Covid-19 cases on the rise in Oyo

  Oyo State has recorded six new confirmed cases of Covid-19, bringing the total number recorded in the state to 143. According to the latest figures released by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Tuesday night, the six cases in Oyo were among the new 226 recorded in 16 states.

The state government had repeatedly called on residents who believe they had come in contact with Covid-19 cases to come forward for a test.

The government had also admonished people with Covid-19 symptoms such as cough, fever, tiredness, body ache and shortness of breath as well as health workers who had been in contact with high-risk groups to present themselves for a test.

Experts had attributed the recent increase in Covid-19 cases in the state to the high number of people that were responding to the call for testing.

COVID-19: FAAN Announces Reduction In Staff Salary From May

The Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria has announced a reduction in salary of staff from May 2020. In an internal circular to all staff, M.D. Musa, General Manager, Administration, FAAN, said the reduction was due to the drop in revenue caused by the COVID-19 outbreak.

The circular reads, “This is to notify all staff that due to the dwindling revenue generation amidst COVID-19 pandemic, management may not be able to pay full salary to staff from May 2020. 

"However, as soon as the revenue situation improves, the balance will be paid.” Reacting to the reduction in salary, the Air Transport Service Senior Staff Association of Nigeria rejected the slash in salary, urging FAAN to call a meeting where fresh decision would be taken concerning salary modalities.

The union in a joint statement by its General Secretary and Deputy General Secretary, Comrade Abdul Rasaq Saidu and Comrade Frances Akinjole, respectively in Lagos said, “We are indeed amazed and disturbed by management's unilateral decision despite our agreement of inviting the union leaders before any decision could be taken. 

"If such affront could be willfully meted out to a component of the staff conditions of service without the knowledge of the national union, which is a party to the agreement, it portends to a possibility of waking up one day to find the COS document clandestinely reviewed.

“If within 24 hours an urgent meeting with inion is not called, we cannot guarantee industrial harmony and the consequences which may arise shall be put onto your doorsteps.”

Curfew: Lagos NMA Directs Doctors, Health Workers To Stay At Home From 6pm Today

  The Lagos State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association has directed its members to sit at home from 6 pm today, Wednesday, May 20, 2020. This follows the conflicting order restricting the movement of essential workers amid the COVID-19 lockdown.

In a statement signed by the Chairman, Dr. Saliu Oseni and the Secretary of the association, Dr. Moronkola Ramon, the NMA deplored the comment of the Commissioner of Police in Lagos state to the effect that essential workers, including doctors and other health workers, are not exempted from the restriction.

“We have observed that despite the directive of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari, through the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, which was clear on the exemption of essential workers including doctors and other health workers from the ongoing lockdown movement restriction.

“The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Mr. Hakeem Odumosu, has been issuing conflicting directives on social and mainstream media to effect that essential workers including doctors and other health workers are not exempted.

The association revealed that the confusion has led to the harassment and intimidation of its members and other health workers, including stopping an ambulance from conveying a patient from getting to its destination.

“As a direct result of the conflicting directives of the government and Lagos State Commissioner of Police, the Lagos State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), was inundated yesterday (Tuesday, May 19, 2020) evening with several cases of harassment and intimidation of doctors and other health-workers by officers and men of the Lagos State police command on the direct order of the commissioner of police to the extent that even ambulances carrying patients with emergency cases were impounded.

There have been strange rumours and unfounded news making rounds on social media in recent times.I want all believers of good news to know that, it is all lies and a picture of how the peddlers of the evil news would have loved our love story to turn out. I would have loved to maintain silence, however, due to concerns being expressed by well meaning people something has to be said. Now, the gospel truth is that I have been busy with ministry off the social media space and you’d all agree with me that with the ongoing pandemic which suddenly sprung up on all of us, only means more work needs to be done. I can’t sit still (as nobody privileged enough should) and this isn’t a time for social media presence but a time that calls for solemnity. Hence my break from what people now call normal. Finally, as duty will have me do, I have been in and out of the palace doing Gods bidding.With all being said, I am compelled to ask the following questions :

Why can’t people verify that which is the truth ?

Why do people believe more in falsehood and negativity?

Woman who smuggled her husband's corpse into Enugu state tests positive for Coronavirus

 

   The Enugu state government has confirmed three new cases of Coronavirus in the state. The State’s Commissioner for Health Obi Emmanuel Ikechukwu who lamented over the continous violation of the interstate travel ban, said the new cases include a widow from Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of the State who smuggled her late husband’s corpse into Enugu State from Lagos for burial.

   Ikechukwu also revealed that two Coronavirus patients have tested negative for the virus after undergoing successful treatment.  He said; 

  “ 2 more COVID-19 patients in Enugu test negative, as State records 3 new positive cases with travel history

“The Enugu State Ministry of Health wishes to announce that 2 more cases out of the previously active COVID-19 cases undergoing treatment in Enugu State have tested negative and are being assessed for discharge from the isolation and treatment centre.

“However, the state has unfortunately received 3 new results of persons who have tested positive for the virus.

“This means that Enugu State has had 15 cases in all, with 9 active cases and 6 cases discharged after testing negative.

“The two cases that have tested negative are case number 5 and her daughter who is case number 9.

“The 3 new positive cases, who entered Enugu State illegally during this ban on inter-state transportation, are as follows:

“Case 13 is a 25-year-old man from Ondo State who lives in Lagos and made his way first to Akwa Ibom, then to Rivers State and finally to Obollo Afor in Udenu LGA of Enugu State, all within the period of closure of all land boundaries and inter-state movement. He developed symptoms while at Obollo Afor, the health authorities were alerted, he was tested and his result came out positive.

“Case 14 is a 38 year old male, from Okpuje in Nsukka LGA, who lives in Nasarawa State, and found his way back to Enugu State during the same period of lockdown.

“On suspecting he may have contacted the virus, he initially went into self-quarantine in a hotel at Nsukka. He subsequently developed symptoms and alerted the health authorities. He was tested and his test result also came back positive.

“Case 15 is a 28 year old female and a widow who hails from Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area, Enugu State and lives in Lagos State with her husband. She recently lost her husband in Lagos and was able to smuggle her husbands corpse back to Enugu State for burial, despite the lockdown in Lagos State and the national ban on inter-state movement . Her actions raised suspicion and the health authorities were alerted. She was subsequently tested and her result came back positive.

“These unfortunate figures are coming up as a result of individuals who have deliberately disobeyed the lockdown order and inter-state transportation as ordered by the Federal and State governments.

“In these times, we all need to comply strictly with all measures and regulations and exercise restraint from behaviours that will put others at risk.

“The good people of Enugu State are still encouraged to continue to comply with the directives of the Federal and Enugu State governments on containment of the spread of COVID-19 as well as the precautionary measures in the public health advisory of the Federal Ministry of Health, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, and the Enugu State Ministry of Health.”
