Petrol tanker crushes pupils of Army day Schools in Effurun to death

 

   At least nine students of Army Children Primary School, Effurun, Uvwie council area of Delta state, have reportedly died after a petrol-laden tanker ran into them on Thursday afternoon.

  Several others were reportedly rushed to the military hospital located inside the General David Ejoor Barracks, Effurun and Central Hospital, Warri. The Nation learnt the incident occurred by a link road opposite the Army Barracks.

It was gathered 12 pupils were rushed to the Central Hospital, Warri from which nine were confirmed dead on arrival. The other three were reportedly referred to the Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH), Oghara after being stabilised. The students were said to be returning home after school hours, when the unfortunate incident occurred.

   President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Prof. Attahiru Jega, former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as Chairman, Governing Council of the University of Jos.

   The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, who disclosed this while addressing journalists in Abuja on Thursday, said Buhari also approved the appointment and reassignment of Chancellors to 42 federal universities.

Multichoice Nigeria debunks FIRS’ N1.8trn tax debt claim

   

   Multichoice Nigeria, Thursday debunked claims that it defaulted in tax payment to the tune of N1.8 trillion as claimed by the Federal Inland Revenues Service, FIRS.

   The pay-television operator, however, said that while it denies the liability as claimed by FIRS, it was not also ready to engage the institution in war of words or media brawl but would find a peaceful and better means of resolving the misunderstanding, should FIRS bring the issue to its notice. It claimed that as at the time of filing this story, FIRS has not officially notified it of such humongous liability and plans to appoint banks to recover it.

PSC Drops Magu, Promotes 24 Police Commissioners

    The Police Service Commission (PSC) has declined the promotion of a former acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu but promoted others including 24 Commissioners of Police.

   “The Commission declined the promotion of CP Magu pending clearance from the office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice and the Office of the Inspector General of Police,” the spokesman  of the PSC, Ikechukwu Ani said in a statement issued on Thursday.

  All newly-promoted Commissioners of Police are now ranked as Assistant Inspectors General (AIGs). He explained that the promotion were the highpoints of the commission’s 12th Plenary Meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday presided over by the PSC Chairman and a former Inspector General of Police, Musiliu Smith.

NCDC Confirms Deadly Delta COVID-19 Variant In Nigeria

 

 

    Nigeria has confirmed the detection of the Delta COVID-19 variant in the West African country.  “The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has detected a confirmed case with the SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant, also known as lineage B.1.617.2,” the health agency said in a statement on Thursday night.

   “The variant was detected in a traveler to Nigeria, following the routine travel test required of all international travelers and genomic sequencing at the NCDC National Reference Laboratory, Abuja.” The NCDC, however, assured Nigerians that the federal government has put measures in place to combat the disease, asking them to adhere to the recommended safety protocols.
