UNILAG enforces ASUU’s strike directive

The Academics Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) of the University of Lagos, Akoka on Tuesday enforced the strike directive given to universities by its national body.

Members of the union also disrupted an ongoing annual lecture where Senator Oluremi Tinubu was the keynote speaker. They also staged a sensitization rally within the university community to garner staff and students’ support for the strike action. It will be recalled that the national body of ASUU yesterday declared indefinite strike sequel to the alleged failure of the federal government to fulfil its 2009 agreement with the union.

According to the union, “part of the 2009 agreement was that professors are to go home with their salaries but they are being deprived of their entitlements.” Other issues in dispute include Registration of Nigerian Universities Pension Management Company (NUPEMCO), University staff
school, fractionalization, non-payment of salaries and unpaid academic allowances.
