        A Twitter user, Stevie Que has taken to the platform to express his anger over 'Bride prize' claims Nigerian parents use every opportunity to scam. He wrote;

Can somebody explain to me why the Africans have no class?? Why do they throw ones at people on their WEDDING they as if they are worthless strippers with no dignity ? Please explain"
   "African parents sell their daughters as if they are prostitutes and call I️t a “bridal fee” or some other dumb poo just to get married... smh why am I paying the parents to marry their daughter? this is sick" "Africans are known for scamming & finessing but this is just sick...  can people be in love IN PEACE without you scamming for once.. I’m not paying nobody parents to marry their daughter.. they better be grateful somebody even wants to marry her"

Editor's Note:

This has got to stop and I', waiting for the hashtag like #NoMorePridePrize to be opened on twitter soonest so that movement could be waged against this nonsense. We are always eager to copy the advanced world on many things as long as it benefits us but we can't copy the ones they do "not collecting bride prize" because of greed.

This also beg the question; Is paying of bride prize biblical? Since Nigeria prides herself as a religious nation. Firstly, bride price is not a condition for marriage but only as a penalty for rape.  Consider Exodus 22:16-17: "If a man seduces a virgin who is not pledged to be married and sleeps with her, he must pay the bride-price, and she shall be his wife. ... He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her.

Is simply put, pride prize is not and has never been a condition for marriage. We need to put an end to this trend. Lets not also not confuse Bride Prize and Dowry. They are two different things.

While bride price is actually the opposite of dowry, a bride price (or bride wealth or bride token) is paid by the groom to the bride's parents or family at the time of the marriage. A dowry is money or property brought into the marriage by the bride. The dowry is usually provided by the bride's parents.
