Prison Staff, Okada Rider Confirmed Dead In Minna Jail Break

 
  The Niger State command of the Nigeria Prison Service has confirmed the killing of one of its staff, Ibrahim Shakaru, by the armed men who invaded the medium security prison, on Sunday night. The officer was on his way to resume duty when he was gunned down by the invaders. The commercial motorcycle rider, who carrying the officer, was also killed.

   The Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Rabiu Shuaibu, who confirmed the jail break to newsmen, in Minna, on Monday, said the unfortunate incident was perpetuated by armed  criminals who attacked the prison.
 
  He said the armed men gain access into the prison after exchange gun fire with prison guard on duty. “This led to the dead of a prison officer and one Okada rider who convey the prison officer on night duty”. Rabiu disclosed that though the actual number of inmates that escaped after is yet to be ascertained, seven prisoners who escaped have been rearrested through combined effort of security agents. According to him, “The Prison authority in Minna is  profiling the number of fleeing inmates to ascertain the escaped prisoners”.

   He, however, said that normalcy has returned to the prison as security agents are working together to ensure that all fleeing inmates are recaptured. It could be recalled that the Minna medium prison which was commissioned in 2001 with 215 bed capacity now accommodates 1,335 inmates. Of this number, only 273 have been convicted, among them 18 condemned convicted criminals.The remaining 1,062 are awaiting trials.
