President Buhari reacts to the rape and murder of UNIBEN student, Uwaila Omozuwa

 

   President Buhari has reacted to the rape and gruesome murder of the first-year student of the University of Benin UNIBEN, Vera Uwaila Omozuwa, by yet to be identified persons on Wednesday, May 27.

   In a tweet posted this evening, the President expressed his deepest condolences to the family and friends of late Uwaila. He also stated that he expects the Police to apprehend and bring those behind the barbaric act to justice. His tweet reads

    ''I would like to offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Uwaila Omozuwa. I expect the Nigeria Police Force to speedily and diligently investigate this case and ensure that all the culprits responsible for this barbaric act are brought to justice.''

Late NDDC Director tested positive for COVID-19

 

 The late acting Director, Finance and Administration of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Ibanga Etang, tested positive for coronavirus, the commission has revealed.

NDDC, in a statement by its Director, Coroporate Affairs, Charles Odili, said the commission was compelled to make the declaration after getting clearance from the deceased family.

“The family has authorised the Commission to announce the late Executive Director tested positive to COVID-19,” Odili said. He said the Rivers State Ministry of Health wrote to the commission to also confirm that the late director died of complications arising from COVID-19.

He said: “The ministry has, therefore, directed the Commission to order all management staff to go into self-isolation for a period of 14 days with effects from today, While seeking the cooperation of the organisation in tracing staff and contractors who have had close contact with the deceased.

“During the meeting with the family, they expressed fervent desire, that the death of the Executive Director should not be politicised, wishing to be left alone to mourn with dignity. This also is the position of the Commission.

“We pray for the peaceful repose of the soul of our Executive Director Finance and Administration, Elder lbanga Bassey Etang”.

NDDC recently shut down the commission’s corporate headquarters following COVID-19 scare triggered by the death of Etang, who was a member of the Interim Management Committee (IMC).

Etang reportedly died at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH), Port Harcourt after a brief illness.

Etang, a former Chairman of Esit Eket Local Government, resigned his appointment as Special Assistant to Governor Emmanuel Udom on Projects on April 9, 2018 and formally registered with the All Progressives Congress (APC) at his Etebi Ward 7.

He was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari on February 19 as part of a five-member IMC led by Prof. Kemebradikumo Daniel Pondei.

COVID-19: Nigerian govt specify churches, mosques that will not be allowed to reopen

 

  The Federal Government has said churches and mosques that do not comply with “required measures”, will not be allowed to reopen. The National Coordinator of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Sani Aliyu, stated this during the daily briefing on Tuesday.

  Aliyu also suggested that it was safer for congregants to worship at home, despite the lifting of ban on religious gatherings. He however warned that “Places of worship that do not comply with required measures should not be allowed to operate.

  “State authorities should not allow such churches or mosques to operate.” Aliyu explained that strict compliance to provided guidelines was important, as that nature of religious gatherings could see Coronavirus spread easily.

Man who brought bombs to US protest to throw at police and light up buildings is arrested

Matthew Lee Rupert, 28, travelled from Galesburg, Illinois, about 300 miles (500 kilometres) south of Minneapolis with the intent of causing damage and looting, according to charges filed in Minnesota federal court Monday.

In a May 29 self-taken video he posted online, Rupert “can be seen passing out explosive devices he possessed, encouraging others to throw his explosives at law enforcement officers, actively damaging property, appearing to light a building on fire and looting businesses in Minneapolis,” the Justice Department said.

“They got SWAT trucks up there … I’ve got some bombs if some of you all want to throw them back … Here I got some more…light it and throw it,” he says in the video.

In another video posted on May 31, he says, “let’s start a riot” and “I’m going to start doing some damage,” the charges allege.

Rupert was charged with one count each of civil disorder, rioting and possession of an explosive device. There was no indication in the indictment of Rupert’s political leanings.

On Saturday, President Donald Trump and Attorney General Bill Barr said they were going to target the leftist “Antifa” group for allegedly driving the rioting and looting around the country during protests sparked by the police killing of a Minneapolis African American man, George Floyd.

Rupert appears to have been in legal trouble in the past.

According to news reports, a Matthew L. Rupert of Galesburg was arrested in 2018 on charges related to trading in stolen guns.

The Galesburg police department also issued a warrant for his arrest on February 7 this year for possession of methamphetamine.

Ex-boyfriend of wife of Customs boss, Hammed Ali demands refund of all monies he spent on her

Mr Zubairu Dalhatu Malamai, ex-boyfriend of Zainab Abdullahi Yahaya, new wife of the Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs Service, Hameed Ali, has asked her to pay him the sum of N9,081,207.45 being money he spent on her during their relationship before she dumped him for the retired military colonel.

Malamai in a letter to Zainab through his lawyer, I.I Wangida, described her as a “cheat”.

According to the young man, in the last three years that he dated her, he spent over N9m on her believing that they were going to get married and live as couple.

Malamai said that the money was spent on opening a business for Zainab and taking care of her and other things around her.

The letter reads in part, “We are solicitors to Zubairu Dalhatu Malamai of No. 224 Durumin Zungura Kano Municipal, Kano State, hereinafter referred to as “our client" on whose instructions we write you.

“Our brief as disclosed to us is that for over three years you have been in a relationship with our client where he has invested so much in your life, future and business when you consistently promised to marry him, even though you knew deep down in your heart you were deceiving our client but you allowed him to continuously spend money and resources on you while he was in the belief that he was doing that to his future wife.

“Be that as it may, we have our client’s brief that you have decided to pick another man for yourself as husband and while our client congratulate you in your new home, we have our client’s instructions to also disclose his displeasure over your reaction few days before your new marriage by taking an unnecessary fight with him thereby insulting and calling him all kinds of names and your claims that he calculate all you have collected from him both as loans, investments and trip tickets so you can pay him as you are no longer in his life.

“In view of the above, we have our client’s instruction to demand from you the following;

“a. The sum of N2,778,207 only being the sum for travel tickets for KSA on 20th March to 5th April 2018, UAE on 17th February to 27th February 2019, PRC April 2019, UAE on 13th June to 19th June, 2019, UAE on 5th July to 10th July 2019, UAE on 30 September to 13th October 2019, UK on 18th January to 23rd January 2020, UAE on 24th January to 25th January 2020.

“b. N1.5m loan for your investment,

“c. N200,000 only paid for you on behalf of Dan Tsanyawa.

“d. N450,000 only for clothing business at US.

“e. N280,000 only for shop rent at Haneefa Plaza on Court Road.

“f. N350,000 only you borrowed to give your father.

“g. N350,000 only house rent refund.

“h. N300,000 only you collected as loan which you paid for your vails.

“l. N360,000 only for your China trip.

“j. N500,000 only you collected for your car purchase.

“k. N250,000 only for all chinchin investment.”

Other things demanded to be returned made by the lawyer on behalf of the ex-boyfriend to the NCS boss’ new wife, includes; “N1, 763,000 only for LEFE clothes, six Abayas which you took out of the 12 Abayas that were sewed.

“Company ID cards in the name of Zainab Abdullahi Yahaya, Fatima Abdullahi Muhammed and Adnan Abdullahi Yahaya,

“Company HP laptop given to you, company HP laptop given to Adnan Abdullahi Yahaya, company uniform given to you, e. a pair of shoe, one set of luggage (5 pieces) one piece of Samsonite luggage, car number plate bearing Bichi Local Government.

“In view of the above, we have our client’s instructions to demand from you and we hereby demand from you the immediate payment of the sum of N9,081,207 only.

“Failure to heed to same shall leave us with no other option than to proceed with legal action to recover the said sum. Your choice in this matter is our preference.

The NCS boss married his new wife on Saturday at a low-key ceremony in Kano State.

This came nearly two years after Ali’s first wife, Hajiya Hadiza Jummai, died in Abuja on October 29, 2018.

Bowen university begins 2nd semester examination online

 

 
 

   

The Vice-Chancellor of Bowen University, Iwo, Osun State, Professor Joshua Ogunwole, has said the institution has commenced second-semester examination for students through the school online platform.

Professor Ogunwole noted that the Second Semester examination of 2019/2020 will be phased saying that the first phase which is virtual is to start on Monday 1st of June 2020.

A statement by the school Head of Information, Protocol and Public Relations, Mr Toba Adaramola, said the VC tasked the students to take time to carefully read the guidelines for the Online Examination as published on the University website.

The VC advised that students should not allow distractions and interference during the online examination and Parents should limit their meddling during the period. He noted that students who have not paid tuition fee will not participate in the online exam but will do so at a later date when they do the needful.

Taraba Govt sends 300 samples of suspected cases for testing

 

The Taraba State Technical Committee on Covid-19 has forwarded the samples of 300 persons traced from contact with positive cases to the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in Abuja for testing.

   Addressing a press conference in Jalingo, the committee chairman and the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Innocent Vakkai, said the committee was expecting the results from the NCDC. A few days back, the Taraba State government announced that the state is now free of Coronavirus after treating and discharging patients with active cases.

   But now, the state has forwarded suspected cases for testing in Abuja. The commissioner for health, who disclosed this encouraged residents not to panic. The state government has partially relaxed the lockdown imposed on the state to enable citizens have windows of opportunity to engage in their businesses .

   But interstate transportation is still banned while courts are no longer in business. Disturbed by the challenges legal officers must be going through as a result of the partial lockdown, a senior legal practitioner presented a cheque of one million naira to young lawyers in the Taraba state NBA to buy needed palliative items.

Obaseki orders investigation of UNIBEN student, Uwaila’s death

 

 

 Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, has ordered a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to the death of a 100 level Microbiology student of the University of Benin, Miss Vera Uwaila, who died from injuries sustained after she was gang-r.a.p.e.d and hit with a fire extinguisher in her church last Wednesday.

It was gathered that the 22-years-old undergraduate was attacked and beaten to a pulp at the Ikpoba Hill branch of Redeemed Church God, in Benin, Edo State, where she had gone to read.

The assailants, it was further gathered, left her for dead, but she was later rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) where she reportedly died Saturday.

Vanguard gathered that on the fateful day, the church security officer had gone to collect keys to the church from its keeper when he was told that there was someone already in the church.

   NBA legend Michael Jordan expressed his sadness and anger on Sunday over the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who died last week after being pinned down by a white police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

  "I am deeply saddened, truly pained and plain angry. I see and feel everyone's pain, outrage and frustration. I stand with those who are calling out the ingrained racism and violence toward people of color in our country. We have had enough," he said.

  The Chicago Bulls legend called for restraint and empathy amid clashes between protesters and police following Floyd’s death. "We must listen to each other, show compassion and empathy and never turn our backs on senseless brutality. We need to continue peaceful expressions against injustice and demand accountability," he added.

  Jordan, 57, invited everyone to stand shoulder to shoulder in order to become part of the solution. "Our unified voice needs to put pressure on our leaders to change our laws, or else we need to use our vote to create systemic change. Every one of us needs to be part of the solution, and we must work together to ensure justice for all."

  He also expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family of George Floyd. "My heart goes out to the family of George Floyd and to the countless others whose lives have been brutally and senselessly taken through acts of racism and injustice," he added.

APC Governors Meet With Tinubu Over Edo Political Crisis

   

Some governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have met with the party’s National Leader, Senator Bola Tinubu. This comes as part of efforts to douse the crisis in the Edo State chapter of the party ahead of the forthcoming governorship election in the state.

The APC in Edo had been split since the disagreement arising from the absence of some lawmakers at the inauguration of the State House of Assembly, with a group loyal to the APC National Chairman, Mr Adams Oshiomhole, and the other led by the incumbent governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki.

In a bid to resolve the dispute between the two groups, the Chairman of the Progressives Governors’ Forum, Atiku Bagudu (Kebbi State), led Governor Obaseki and six other governors to seek Tinubu’s intervention in the matter.

The governors who attended the meeting which held on Sunday in Lagos included Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo), Mohammed Abubakar (Jigawa), Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Abdullahi Ganduje (Kano), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), and Adeboyega Oyetola (Osun).
